This step will be part of the city’s rapid development of transportation infrastructure and will significantly increase the efficiency and convenience of passenger transport.

Rail Baltic Estonia has signed a contract for procurement consulting services

Danish State Railways (DSB) and railway infrastructure operator Banedanmark have signed a contract with leading transport technology manufacturer Siemens Mobility for the supply of equipment for autonomous trains totaling €270 million.

This includes CBTC systems and GoA4-level onboard equipment for 226 new trains, which will be manufactured and delivered by 2038.

One of the key elements of implementing autonomous control will be the modernization of the CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) system, which has been used on the S-Bane line since 2011.

The updated version of Siemens Mobility’s CBTC Trainguard MT will reduce energy consumption by 20% and increase network capacity, which is important for ensuring smooth train operation in the city.

In addition to Siemens Mobility, companies such as CAF and Alstom are also bidding to manufacture and supply autonomous trains.

It is expected that the total cost of the contract for 226 trains will be €3.5 billion.

Amtrak aims to achieve zero emissions by 2045

This contract will be signed in the first half of 2025 and will include not only the delivery of trains but also their technical maintenance for 30 years.

There is also an option for 100 additional trains, highlighting the ambitious plans for the city’s transportation system modernization.

The new autonomous trains will be equipped with advanced digital radio communication systems, and the two depots in Hundige and Høje-Taastrup, where the trains will be serviced, will also undergo modernization.

Additionally, there are plans to update the dispatch control system for efficient train movement control and coordination.

It’s important to note that in the new train fleet, despite the use of autonomous technologies, there will be the possibility to install driver cabins.

This is an important addition that will ensure safety and flexibility in case human intervention is needed.

Autonomous trains in Copenhagen will not only be a symbol of advanced transportation technologies but will also allow the city to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve passenger service quality.

This step confirms the Danish authorities’ commitment to sustainable and innovative development of urban infrastructure, making Copenhagen even more attractive for residents and tourists.
