Contract Progresses on Upgrade Works for the Melton Line

The Melton Line enters a critical growth phase as crews push ahead with upgrades that modernise stations, add capacity, and prepare the corridor for long-term electrification across Melbourne’s fast-growing west.

The $650 million program stretches across Cobblebank, Rockbank, Caroline Springs and Deer Park, and crews extend platforms to handle nine-car V/Locity trains. At peak times, those longer sets should lift capacity by about 50 percent.
Federal and Victorian governments commit $325 million, and that split funding backs the project at both levels. To be fair, planners see Cobblebank as a hub because the scheme adds a stabling yard for later electrification.
Melton Line Works Deliver Bridges and Station Capacity
Crews establish worksites at Deer Park and prepare staging at Caroline Springs, and these steps start to reshape travel in the west. Workers advance level crossing removals in parallel, so disruption now buys safer journeys tomorrow.
Engineers pour foundations for rail bridges that replace level crossings at Coburns Road and Exford Road. They build road bridges at Ferris Road and Hopkins Road, so trains and vehicles meet at ground level far less.
Next year, the last level crossings on the corridor will disappear and Melton Station will open with four platforms for Ballarat services. Extended platforms will handle trains that start and finish at Melton; “we can see the cliff coming,” as one planner put it.
