Construction of Alat-Osmanli-Astara Railway Line Section Underway
25.04.2025
The construction of the 245-kilometer Alat-Osmanli-Astara railway line has begun, aiming to enhance Azerbaijan’s transport infrastructure and contribute to the Zangezur Corridor. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) is leading the project to reconstruct this vital railway line. The 60-kilometer stretch passing through Karabakh will be integral to the new Zangezur Corridor, improving regional connectivity.

This section is part of the larger North-South International Transport Corridor, a project designed to foster international trade and logistics.
Key Phases of Construction
The reconstruction is divided into four phases. The first phase focuses on restoring the 60-kilometer stretch of the Alat-Osmanli line. This involves constructing 131 engineering structures, including railway bridges, road overpasses, and underpasses. Additionally, the reconstruction includes the installation of drainage systems to ensure water flow management and prevent erosion.
Technological Advances in Railway Construction
One of the most advanced technologies being used in the construction process is geogrid, a synthetic engineering material. This technology strengthens the soil and track surface, making the railway more durable.
Geogrid also helps prevent erosion and mitigates subsidence risks, particularly in areas with high groundwater levels. This solution is part of international best practices in railway construction.
As the first phase continues, the rerouting of freight transport will occur through the Hajigabul-Shirvan railway line. The Alat-Shirvan line was dismantled prior to the start of the project, necessitating this temporary adjustment to ensure continued goods transportation.
The construction of the Alat-Osmanli-Astara railway line plays a significant role in Azerbaijan’s infrastructure modernization. Once complete, it will not only improve domestic transportation but also position Azerbaijan as a key player in global trade.
This development will contribute significantly to the economic growth and logistical integration of the region.
