Colas Rail Tests HVO Fuel for Locomotives
28.09.2023
Colas Rail is testing the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a more environmentally friendly alternative to diesel fuel for refueling its Class 56 freight locomotive, according to the railway portal Railway Supply
HVO is produced from oils and animal fats, which, according to Colas Rail, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.
The company estimates that HVO trials will save approximately 123 tonnes of carbon by the end of 2023 compared to using traditional diesel fuel.

Colas Rail is also collaborating with FuelActive to reduce fuel consumption and particulate emissions from rail grinding machines.
The patented FuelActive technology draws fuel from the top of the tank, reducing the risk of contaminated fuel entering the fuel delivery system, ensuring a cleaner combustion process, and extending filter life.
Colas Rail has also replaced two diesel forklift trucks with electric equivalents.
