Cargo turnover of the port of St. Petersburg fell by 41% in March
23.04.2022
Containerized cargo is half as much as a year ago.
It is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to @belzhd_live.
The cargo turnover of the port of Petersburg in March 2022 amounted to 3.1 million tons, which is 41% less than in March 2021. The most dramatic decline is in container handling.
The reduction in cargo turnover is associated with sanctions and a boycott of Russian cargo by the largest sea carriers and European port operators.
For the thirty one days of March, 101.1 thousand TEUs of container cargo were handled in the port of St. Petersburg, the Baltic Sea Ports Administration reported on April 14. This is 44% less than it was for the same period last year. In tons the drop is even greater – exactly 50%. The fact is that many of the ship calls to St. Petersburg are made by sea lines only to pick up empty containers.
A strong drop in transshipment of ferrous metals – 49% (292.7 thousand tons), and the processing of mineral fertilizers collapsed immediately by 72% (208.4 thousand tons). Among other items important for the port of St. Petersburg are oil products, the turnover of which decreased by 10% (792.5 thousand tons), packaged cargo (-6%, 102.6 thousand tons) and other general cargo (-7%, 128.7 thousand tons).
