Canberra Light Rail Expansion: What to Expect

The $577 million project, co-funded by the national government and the Australian Capital Territory, introduces a crucial extension to the transport network. It includes a bridge over Parkes Way and three additional stops: City Edinburgh Avenue, City South, and Commonwealth Park. The completion is scheduled for 2028.

In the long term, Stage 2B will add 9.3 km, extending through the Parliamentary Triangle to Woden. This expansion will create a north-south corridor, fully integrated with electric buses to enhance urban mobility.

How Canberra Light Rail Will Transform Public Transport?

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King highlighted the extension’s role in reshaping the city’s transit system. She emphasized that Canberra Light Railconnects key residential areas with business districts, recreation hubs, and lifestyle centers.

“This project is more than just a transport initiative,” King stated on February 17. “It is a transformative step in urban mobility, fostering growth and sustainability.”

Finance Minister Katy Gallagher echoed her sentiments, celebrating the light rail’s successful first stage. She noted its positive impact on the City-Gungahlin corridor, increasing public transport use and reducing congestion.

“I am excited to see the tracks extend southward,” Gallagher said. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to efficient, eco-friendly urban transport solutions for Canberra’s future.
