Economic and Transport Benefits of Canberra Light Rail

Planners expect completion in 2027, linking Gungahlin and North Canberra with several important destinations. Key locations include City West, Australian National University (ANU), New Acton, and Lake Burley Griffin.

Officials anticipate around 1,000 new jobs, boosting economic activity and enhancing local mobility. Residents and visitors will benefit from better transportation and reduced road congestion.

Catherine King, Australia’s Minister for Infrastructure, praised the project’s role in modernizing transport. She emphasized that government funding supports nationwide infrastructure development and connectivity improvements.

The light rail expansion is part of a broader effort to integrate sustainable public transit. A future-proof system will link residential zones with business districts and entertainment hubs.

Canberra’s transport network continues growing, with additional phases already planned for development. Authorities intend to complete the full light rail extension to Woden by 2033.

Transport Minister Chris Steel highlighted the project’s importance for long-term urban mobility. He stressed that light rail expansion, combined with electric buses, will enhance connectivity.
