Caltrain rider approval reached record-high levels in the agency’s 2025 Triennial Survey. The survey found stronger scores for the current schedule, on-time performance, and the overall Caltrain experience. The results followed the launch of faster, more frequent electrified service. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The findings, presented to Caltrain’s Technology, Operations, Planning, and Safety (TOPS) Committee, covered rider satisfaction and broader ridership patterns. They also showed that one-third of riders are new to the system.

Commuting remains the main reason people use Caltrain. Most riders reported taking the train 2 to 3 days per week. This pattern reflects hybrid work schedules. The survey also found that two-thirds of riders have access to a car. In addition, 37% are classified as low-income.

Caltrain rider approval and service ratings

Customer satisfaction continued to rise in the latest survey. Riders rated the current schedule at 4.1 out of 5. That compares with 3.7 in 2022. On-time performance increased from 3.9 to 4.4. Also, the overall Caltrain experience rose to 4.5, up from 4.1 in the previous survey.

According to Caltrain officials, the results are consistent with other rider surveys. Those surveys were conducted since the agency launched its faster, more frequent electrified Caltrain service. They have also pointed to growing approval of the service.

The survey also showed how passengers reach their origin stations. Walking accounted for 33% of access trips. Transit followed at 18%. Active transportation, including bikes and scooters, represented 17%. Meanwhile, another 17% of riders were dropped off by car or ride-share. A further 16% drove and parked at their station.

Fare payment patterns have shifted as well. Clipper was used by 86% of respondents. At the same time, paper ticket use has fallen.

Popular Caltrain stations in the survey

San Francisco Station remained the leading station for both boardings and departures. It accounted for 28% of boardings and 19% of departures. Other high-ranking boarding stations were spread across the three counties served by Caltrain.

Palo Alto accounted for 9% of boardings, followed by San Jose Diridon at 8%. Redwood City and Mountain View each represented 5%. Separately, Millbrae and Hillsdale each accounted for 4%.

For departures, San Jose Diridon ranked next after San Francisco Station with 11%. Palo Alto followed at 10%. Mountain View and Sunnyvale each accounted for 7%. Redwood City represented 6%, according to Caltrain officials.

As Metro Magazine reported, Caltrain collected 3,622 responses during a four-week period last Fall. The survey had a margin of error of +/- 1.47% and a 69% response rate. The agency said it uses the findings to shape service planning. It also uses them to improve how it targets promotional efforts.
