Caltrain celebrates a year of electric use at record ridership growth, speedier schedules, and cleaner trains as it demonstrates the Bay Area’s daily commute being transformed through the upgrading of Caltrain.

Caltrain fuels record passenger growth

Caltrain rode 9.1 million riders in 2025 fiscal year versus 6.2 million in the previous year. Weekend travel tripled more than twice, and July travel increased 78% from 2024.

Event travel also spiked. San Francisco Giants game trips increased by 82%, as the $1 Youth Fare four times the number of youth riders. “Electrification has totally transformed Caltrain,” Executive Director Michelle Bouchard reported. “We’re now providing cleaner, faster, and more frequent trips, and riderships are answering in record numbers.”

Caltrain provides snappier service and cleaner technology

It now connects San Francisco and San Jose in an hour by express train, the local version taking 75 minutes. Weekend frequencies had been doubled, as had the number of stations receiving 15-minutely sets.

The new electric fleet features Wi-Fi, charging stations, quieter ride, and cleaner cabin. Regenerative braking brings back 23% of power to the grid and saved $3 million in operating last year.

Environmental and economic benefits

Governor Gavin Newsom was fulsome in his tribute. “Today we celebrate one year of electrified Caltrain — using clean technology to link communities and economies and set the stage for high-speed rail,” he said.

The project also supplied economic benefit, underpinning 33,000 jobs spread over 36 states in design, construction, and supply chain activities. In its first year after opening, electrified rail has registered tangible gains in ridership, sustainability, and efficiency.
