Caldwell moves ahead with quiet zone plan at Union Pacific crossings
09.04.2026
The Caldwell quiet zone project moved ahead in late March. The city approved a plan involving seven Union Pacific Railroad grade crossings in Idaho.

Caldwell quiet zone project and crossing locations
According to the City of Caldwell, the project is estimated to cost $240,000. The quiet zone would cover crossings on Kimball, 5th, 9th, 12th and 21st Avenues. In addition, it would cover Linden Street and Ustick Road. Under the Federal Railroad Administration’s quiet-zone rule, a quiet zone allows train horn elimination. That applies only in designated areas. It also requires federally required safety measures at the affected crossings.

Safety upgrades at Union Pacific grade crossings
Also, the city council authorized additional safety features. They are intended to improve protection for motorists and pedestrians at those locations. Those crossing safety upgrades apply to the same seven railroad crossings in the plan.
Work timeline and project coordination
Meanwhile, work is expected to begin in June. The city plans to coordinate with contractors and partners, including UP, on the crossing upgrades.
