The Broomehill rapid rail project is now complete, introducing a 2.1-kilometer rail siding to streamline transport. This infrastructure allows faster grain loading and enhances overall efficiency in the Albany Zone.

Broomehill Rapid Rail Expands Capacity and Reduces Delays

The project features a 4,400-tonne capacity fixed rail loading facility, ensuring seamless operations. The system enables loading of a 60-wagon train (3,600 tonnes) within four hours, without interfering with the mainline.

Previously, Broomehill’s loading infrastructure only handled 30 wagons, requiring 11 hours and multiple shunts. These inefficiencies caused frequent disruptions, slowing down transport across the region.

Strategic Investment Strengthens Regional Rail Transport

The initiative was jointly financed by the Western Australian and Commonwealth Governments through the ASCI Program. This investment supports long-term infrastructure goals and optimizes logistics networks.

Broomehill is the third CBH Group site upgraded under this program, following developments in Brookton (August 2023) and Konnongorring (November 2024). These enhancements align with CBH’s broader modernization strategy.

CBH Group’s CEO Ben Macnamara described the project as a transformative step for the Albany Zone. These improvements will create lasting benefits for Western Australia’s grain transportation network.

“The Broomehill rapid rail project enhances flexibility in our supply chain, improving grain transport efficiency,” Macnamara explained. “Increasing rail capacity also helps reduce the number of trucks on the roads.”

He highlighted the significant time savings provided by this upgrade, which enables larger trains to be loaded in half the previous duration. These changes directly impact regional supply chain operations.

Additionally, a new rail passing loop allows for multiple train sets to run simultaneously in the Albany Zone. This improvement strengthens logistics while boosting the capacity for grain exports.

“Transporting more grain via rail increases the international competitiveness of WA grain growers,” Macnamara added. “It also enhances road safety by reducing truck traffic across Western Australia.”

CBH expressed gratitude to project partners, contractors, and government agencies for their contributions. Their collaborative efforts ensured the project’s successful and timely completion.

“Rail outloading projects like Broomehill play a crucial role in CBH’s ongoing infrastructure investment strategy,” he emphasized. “Enhancing rail capacity strengthens WA’s grain industry and future export potential.”

A high-performing logistics network is essential for maintaining the viability of Western Australian grain growers. Reliable transport systems contribute to stable supply chains and sustained agricultural growth.

CBH has already met its Horizon 1 goal, achieving two million tonnes of grain exports in a month. This milestone underscores the importance of continued infrastructure expansion.

Moving forward, CBH is progressing toward Horizon 2, a key phase in its ‘Path to 2033’ strategy. This stage aims to increase monthly grain export capacity to 2.5 million tonnes when required.

“The efficiencies created by rapid rail outloading projects like Broomehill are crucial to achieving our long-term goals,” Macnamara concluded. “These improvements position CBH for sustained operational success.”
