Martin County has pledged $15 million, but federal support is essential for completion. Yet, recent cuts to similar rail projects in Texas and California cast doubt on Stuart’s chances.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently canceled a $60 million rail grant in Texas, and the federal government may pull support from California’s high-speed rail line.

This growing pattern worries advocates like Sherry Lee. She believes national politics are shifting away from infrastructure investment and fears Brightline’s future could be collateral damage.

“There’s a clear trend to reduce federal spending,” Lee said. “Brightline is caught in the middle of it.”

The administration has proposed cutting over 100,000 federal jobs and slashing billions from nondefense programs. While the Federal Railroad Administration won’t speculate, it noted that next year’s DOT budget includes more rail grant funding.

Brightline’s Future Tied to Grant Outcome

County officials said they’ll reapply if this cycle fails. However, if funds don’t materialize, they will exit the agreement. A contract clause allows withdrawal if the grant falls through.

“It’s standard to include a termination clause,” a county official confirmed. “We can’t fund this without federal support.”

Legal and Financial Uncertainty Surround Brightline

Attorney Glen Torcivia said Brightline can also back out. “You can’t commit $60 million without grant funding,” he said. “No one can spend money they don’t have.”

Despite the risks, Lee remains hopeful. “Brightline adds long-term value,” she said. “It’s essential infrastructure for our community.”

For now, the station’s fate rests on Washington’s priorities—and whether future rail projects remain a national priority amid tightening budgets.
