More than 1 million free tickets have been issued to citizens of Ukraine and more than a thousand trains have been sent from border stations – PKP Intercity constantly maintains rail links with Ukraine, which allows its citizens to escape the war.
Since February 26, more than 1 million citizens of Ukraine have traveled free of charge by train to various directions in Poland, reports the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to nakolei.pl.
Most of the people, over 305 000, downloaded free tickets from Warsaw, almost 151 000 started their journey from Krakow, over 90 000 from Przemysl and over 70 000 from Wroclaw.
Since February 24 this year, 355 000 Ukrainians from the border regions have already taken advantage of rail transport.
The main directions for further movement immediately after crossing the border are Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw and Katowice.
To make these trips possible, more than 1 000 trains have been launched to date.
The period from March 7 to 17 was the peak time for the exportation of refugees from Ukraine. In recent days, PKP Intercity has recorded a significant reduction in the number of refugees traveling on the company’s trains.
In the case of Przemysl, we are talking about a decrease of up to 63%, and in the case of Helm – more than 66%.
It is worth emphasizing that PKP Intercity constantly operates regular flights throughout the country.
In order to ensure the highest possible efficiency of travel and allow as many people as possible to travel, the company increased the capacity of the railcars from February 24 to March 29 this year.
