BLW Achieves Milestone with 2,500th Electric Locomotive Rollout

BLW achieved a major milestone as it rolled out its 2,500th electric locomotive, reinforcing India’s leadership in rail manufacturing and driving modernization for both domestic and international markets. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The event at Banaras Rail Engine Factory highlighted rapid progress since 2017, when BLW began producing electric engines. Reaching this record in eight years reflects innovation and commitment to the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” mission.

BLW Expands Technological Advancements
General Manager Naresh Pal Singh flagged off the WAP-7 class 6,000 HP locomotive during a ceremony attended by employees, officials, and media. The achievement also celebrates the role of women like Anita Devi and Shruti Srivastava in core engineering roles.

The advanced WAP-7 features real-time monitoring, regenerative braking, and air-conditioned driver cabs. It also includes a modified gear ratio for speeds up to 140 km/h, improving efficiency for express and passenger services.
BLW Strengthens Global Presence
BLW has produced 10,822 locomotives to date, including 7,498 diesel and 2,500 electric models. In FY 2024-25 alone, the factory delivered 472 electric engines, highlighting its growing capacity and expertise.
Beyond domestic supply, BLW supports international projects. Recently, it shipped two AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique under a 10-unit export order, enhancing India’s global influence in rail technology.
A multimedia presentation showcased progress in green energy adoption and development initiatives. This success positions BLW as a powerhouse in locomotive production and a key player in India’s modernization and sustainability efforts.
