Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s Minister of Transport and Communications, Korman Ismailov, made the announcement. It came during a meeting with Irene Plank, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Bulgaria.

BDZ DB railcars and fleet shortages in Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s railway system faces a serious shortage of passenger coaches and trains. Also, that shortage directly affects service quality. Overcrowded trains are one result. In addition, frequent delays remain a problem. At the same time, keeping to schedules is difficult on high-traffic routes.

The national rail operator cannot provide the necessary level of comfort and reliability. Still, that limits its ability to meet growing demand for passenger rail transport. BDZ fleet modernization is therefore seen as essential. The acquisition of new railcars is seen the same way. Both steps aim to improve the travel experience. They also aim to increase the attractiveness of public transport in Bulgaria.

“BDZ is participating in the tender for the acquisition of rolling stock to ensure more reliable and comfortable travel conditions for citizens,” the minister stated.

Separately, Bulgaria received 19 modernized DB railcars in 2024 under another contract.

New passenger rolling stock contracts

Regarding new passenger rolling stock, BDZ has signed contracts with Alstom and Škoda.

According to Alstom, the company will deliver 35 Coradia Stream electric intercity trains under a EUR 600 million contract. Meanwhile, that agreement was signed in April 2025 with the BULEMU consortium. It was formed by Alstom and RVP Invest. Its total value is EUR 720 million.

Alstom and Škoda deliveries for BDZ

As previously covered by Railway Supply, in 2024, Škoda announced a contract for the delivery of 25 RegioPanter electric multiple units. For example, the deal included a firm order for 20 four-car trains. It also included an option for another five RegioPanter multiple units. Separately, that option was exercised in November 2024. The first two trains arrived in Bulgaria this month.
