Azerbaijan Strengthens Green Initiatives in the Railway Sector
In November 2024, Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) and UAE-based renewable energy company Masdar agreed on a phased decarbonization of the country’s rolling stock.
The plan includes transitioning from diesel to electric traction and increasing the share of renewable energy in power supply.
Masdar is also involved in clean energy development projects in Azerbaijan, including solar and wind power plants with a combined capacity of up to 10 GW.
Azerbaijan Modernizes Its Transport Infrastructure with International Support
That same month, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Investment Bank.
The agreement outlines plans to upgrade and expand the Baku Metro, aiming to encourage a shift from private vehicles to public transit to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Through these measures, Azerbaijan demonstrates a comprehensive approach to reducing carbon emissions in its transport sector, with strong backing from international partners for the sustainable development of railway and metro infrastructure.
