Azerbaijan’s Port of Zira Sends First Sulfur Train to Europe

Azerbaijan’s Port of Zira has sent its first sulfur train to Europe. The upgraded railway, Dubendi–Zira–Gurgen–Port Zira, improves transport efficiency and boosts regional logistics. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The railway company completed a 21-kilometer reconstruction project, including a 9-kilometer new section. This upgrade enables faster and more efficient freight transport, improving trade between key regions.

The port dispatched a train carrying 13,000 tons of sulfur, with plans for growth. Future monthly shipments could reach 60,000 tons, significantly increasing transport capacity.
Expanding infrastructure will support handling of additional cargo types, such as urea. These improvements strengthen Azerbaijan’s position in global logistics and export markets.
Future Development of Azerbaijan’s Port of Zira
The new railway route enhances the country’s role in the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. This network will facilitate trade between Europe and Central Asia, boosting regional connectivity.
Rail freight volumes continue to grow, improving overall transport efficiency. In 2024, Azerbaijan’s railways moved 18.5 million tons of cargo, including 7.3 million tons in transit.
This figure is 5.7% higher than in 2023, highlighting the project’s success. Infrastructure modernization will further improve transport accessibility, reducing delays and increasing trade flow.
