The Hamburg Digital S-Bahn autonomous driving project involves trains on a 23-kilometer route in Hamburg on line 21 between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf / Aumühle, reports Railway Supply  magazine citing Nakolei Pl.

The first tests have already passed successfully. The highly automated system is based on the future European ATO standard, working with the Pan-European Train Control System (ETCS).

Automated railway operation provides significantly higher frequency and therefore passenger capacity, improves schedule stability and achieves lower energy consumption by optimizing travel profiles. According to Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH, with this project Hamburg has become a pioneer in the digitization of German collective transport and large-scale rail transport.

Hamburg is actively promoting the railway transport of the future by introducing innovative technologies in the Digital S-Bahn pilot project. This technology provides solutions that will enable the development of the city’s urban rail network.
