Work at the Clarinda launch site marks the beginning of SRL East, a vital infrastructure corridor linking Cheltenham to Box Hill. Four TBMs will operate from this location—two tunneling north toward Glen Waverley and two heading south to Cheltenham.

Suburban Connect, a consortium of engineering firms, will manage tunneling between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley. At the same time, Terra Verde will oversee tunnel excavation from Glen Waverley to Box Hill.

Each TBM will be assembled over three months and will begin tunneling via a “flying start,” allowing excavation to begin while assembly continues behind the cutterhead. On average, the machines are expected to progress up to 90 meters per week.

Australia Prepares for Major TBM Operations

Australia is using advanced construction methods to accelerate progress and improve coordination between segments. These techniques are intended to keep the $35 billion project on schedule and ensure timely delivery by 2035.

By launching all four TBMs from a single site, crews can streamline logistics and reduce delays across the project corridor.

Australia’s SRL to Deliver Jobs and Mobility Gains

Australia anticipates that the Suburban Rail Loop will generate up to 8,000 direct jobs during the construction phase. This investment also aims to relieve congestion and provide faster public transport options for millions in Melbourne’s suburbs.

Once operational, SRL East will create a seamless loop between key employment, education, and residential hubs—supporting both economic growth and environmental goals.
