18.06.2024
The European Union has taken a significant step in developing transport infrastructure by approving a new regulation for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which includes the construction of a new standard-gauge railway line to the port of Klaipeda in Lithuania, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This project aims to enhance transport connections in the Baltic region and Eastern Europe, providing an alternative to road transport.

The new railway line will have a gauge of 1435 mm, greatly improving logistics infrastructure in Lithuania and strategically connecting it with other EU countries.
Special attention is given to integrating this line into a new transport corridor linking the Baltic, Black, and Aegean Seas, serving as a key artery for economic development and cooperation in the region.
Construction of this infrastructure will reduce reliance on road transport and diversify the operations of Klaipeda State Seaport, opening new markets and opportunities for exports and imports.
This underscores Lithuania’s strategic importance as a transportation hub in Northern, Southern, and Western Europe.
The updated TEN-T regulation also considers other key infrastructure projects such as Rail Baltica, the Via Baltica highway, and the existing Vilnius-Klaipeda railway line, aiming to create a comprehensive multimodal network integrating various modes of transport for efficient movement of goods and passengers across Europe.
Overall, the approval of the new railway line to Klaipeda opens new prospects for development not only for Lithuania but also for the broader European economy, enhancing competitiveness and resilience of the region’s transport infrastructure.
