An agreement between the government of Chisinau, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Commission was signed on Tuesday for the modernization of railways in the Republic of Moldova, according to the railway portal Railway Supply, citing railwaypro.

The Republic of Moldova has not invested in railway infrastructure for the past 30 years, but due to the war in Ukraine and changes in logistics chains, there is an urgent need to invest in this transportation infrastructure, said Lilia Dabija, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development in Chisinau.

The grant and credit agreement has a total value of 43 million euros and is intended for the restoration of the Velcineţ-Okniţa-Bălţi-Ungheni-Chisinau-Căinari railway corridor.

Out of the total amount of goods transiting through the Republic of Moldova via solidarity corridors, only 35% are transported by rail.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of Moldova intends to complete works on 128 kilometers of railways for which it has received funding, as well as an additional 233 kilometers that are already in the evaluation stage, by 2025.
