Amtrak modernizes West Coast operations with new infrastructure

Construction crews began work after the 2023 contract award. Early tasks included removing structures, site grading, and pile driving to stabilize the foundation. Full excavation is expected to finish by late 2025.

Amtrak plans to erect the new facility’s main structure in early 2026, with the entire yard upgrade scheduled for completion by 2027.

Amtrak invests in national maintenance hub expansion

Seattle is one of six sites where Amtrak is upgrading facilities to support its Airo fleet. Other projects are advancing in Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington, D.C., with procurement ongoing for yards in New York City and Rensselaer.

The new Airo trains—featuring unified trainsets with Siemens Charger power—will need streamlined and consistent maintenance practices across the national network.

During a recent West Coast tour, Amtrak President Roger Harris visited Seattle to review progress, lead media tours, and engage with local teams and partners.

He emphasized that this strategic investment will elevate safety, comfort, and reliability for future rail passengers across the region.

The King Street Yard will include two service bays for inspections and repairs, along with a dedicated cleaning area. These upgrades aim to reduce turnaround times and ensure reliable daily performance.

By investing in specialized infrastructure, Amtrak seeks to modernize its operations and meet growing demand for fast, comfortable, and dependable train travel in the years ahead.
