Part of the Art at Amtrak® program, this initiative enriches travel experiences with diverse, engaging public art. In collaboration with PennDOT and the City of Lancaster’s Public Art program, Amtrak brings this vision to its historic Lancaster station. Sharon Tepper, Director of Art at Amtrak, shared excitement about the project’s impact on visitors and the local community.

Amtrak Partners with Local Artists

Artists Libby Modern and Jill C. Good led the project, incorporating fabrics and stories from residents into a living quilt. The installation symbolizes Lancaster’s rich history, Amish roots, and evolving multicultural identity.

Lancaster Station, in operation since 1929, connects Pennsylvania communities via Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian trains. Today, the station also serves as a platform for celebrating regional art and culture.

This initiative unfolds in two phases: large-scale quilt-inspired window art is set to be installed this spring, while the completed community quilt is on display now. Lancaster Station’s ongoing exhibitions have long showcased the city’s artistic heritage.

Modern, a Lancaster-based artist, blends art and graphic design to address social issues through her studio, Modern Art. Good, an acclaimed textile artist, modernizes Lancaster’s quilting traditions with innovative techniques and exhibits her work nationally.

Amtrak’s commitment to celebrating communities through art continues to inspire and connect people, offering travelers and locals a meaningful glimpse into Lancaster’s cultural fabric.
