Amtrak train crash near Hartford disrupts travel amid storm
01.11.2025
An Amtrak train derailed a tree that fell Thursday night as the remnants of Hurricane Melissa passed through the area, forcing passengers to board another train after the line was cleared.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak confirms Hartford train incident
Amtrak spokesperson Jason Abrams said the Northeast Regional Train No. 148, en route from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Massachusetts, collided with the falling tree at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday night just north of Hartford. The storm had brought high wind gusts and a lot of rain to the region.
Quoting Abrams, Amtrak crews removed the debris from the tracks so passengers could board Train 478 to continue their journey. He confirmed there were no injuries reported and apologized for the inconvenience caused, saying, “‘We apologize for the inconvenience to customers.’
The storm was realized as the remains of Hurricane Melissa brought up to 1.76 inches of rain to Hartford. Weather conditions indicated gusty winds and flooding reported from central Connecticut.
Amtrak adjusts schedule after equipment unavailability
On Friday, Amtrak said the Train No. 125 between Springfield and Hartford routes was canceled because of the unavailability of the equipment used in the tragedy due to the disaster. Amtrak said it would handle the route using buses.
Service remained operative between New Haven and Washington, D.C. on the adjusted schedule. Amtrak HAS confirmed, however, that once the inspection process was complete and the trains cleared, service would be fully restored.
Local authorities reported nothing except the uprooted tree about the possible injury or damage to the area. However, the storm was the reason for some disruptions reported in the state of Connecticut because the remnants of Hurricane Melissa passed through New England.
Amtrak was still concentrating on the safety of passengers as well as their coordination in order to achieve uninterrupted restoration services.
