Amtrak Service Halted After CSX Train Crash in Virginia

Services between Richmond and Newport News continue to be suspended due to a CSX derailment, while cleanup activities in relation to environmental concerns continue.

The 70-mile route typically had one daily round-trip service between Richmond and the city of Newport News. Arrangements were made by the trains’ operators, Amtrak, to provide replacement buses, ensuring commuters retained their routes.

It was confirmed by officials that the federal, state, and environmental crews were assisting CSX to mitigate contaminants. The objective was to reinstate safe rail operations and environmental normalcy as soon as possible.

“If current site conditions continue, we expect normal operations next week,” stated Amtrak in regards to their train service. “Safety of our passengers and the environment drive every decision we make when restoring our operations.”
