These funds come through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program, overseen by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), which aims to improve infrastructure projects, including the Chicago Hub Improvement Program (CHIP).

Amtrak’s Chicago Rail Infrastructure Modernization: Benefits for the Midwest and Beyond

The allocated grants allow Amtrak to implement CHIP, a large-scale project focused on enhancing rail connections to Chicago and increasing ridership in the Midwest. Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner emphasized that the CHIP program and other projects would double Amtrak ridership across the country by 2040. He added that such grants would positively impact daily routes on which thousands of people rely every day.

FRA Administrator Amit Bose announced that this year’s funding supports 300 rail projects nationwide, representing the most significant investment in American rail over the past 50 years. FRA hopes to continue collaborating with Amtrak and state partners to deliver a world-class passenger rail system that Americans deserve. This funding will support existing Amtrak routes as well as future corridors, enhancing the Midwest’s transportation network.

Illinois, thanks to its strategic location, will be a key region for large-scale rail infrastructure upgrades. Senator Dick Durbin noted that this investment would position Illinois as an important link for the nation. Meanwhile, Senator Tammy Duckworth stressed the importance of modern Midwest rail lines for both passengers and freight.

U.S. Congressional representatives from Illinois also supported the initiative, including Representative Mike Quigley, who emphasized the need for improved safety and accessibility in Chicago. Representative Jesus “Chuy” Garcia highlighted the importance of focusing on Chicago’s Union Station for effective mobility.

Rail Passengers Association President and CEO Jim Mathews noted that such steps genuinely improve railroads for everyone: removing bottlenecks, increasing speeds, and enhancing safety. In his view, the CRISI grant will accelerate achieving these goals, creating a modern rail infrastructure that meets today’s demands.
