Amtrak plans to double its passenger count by 2040

Amtrak is investing approximately $5.5 billion in its largest annual capital program for train modernization, station improvements, tunnel and bridge enhancements, and critical infrastructure upgrades. Notable projects include the Frederick Douglass Tunnel program, East River Tunnel restoration, and major Northeast Corridor developments such as the Portal North Bridge, Hudson Tunnel, Sawtooth Bridges Replacement, and Dock Bridge Rehab.

The company is also advancing mega-projects like the Chicago Hub Improvement Program, New York Penn Station Expansion, and Washington Union Station Reconstruction.

Amtrak supports partners in improving future services, including Penn Station Access in New York, Long Bridge Project in Virginia, and Compass Rail in Massachusetts.

The first Amtrak Airo train, part of the New Acela service, will be built by the end of 2024, ready for testing.

Additionally, proposals for replacing Amtrak’s fleet will be considered.

Amtrak’s strategic plan for climate vulnerability and sustainability will engage suppliers in carbon emission reduction goals, working towards transitioning 100% of its rail fleet to electric power by 2035.
