Amtrak NextGen Acela to Begin Service in August
Amtrak will launch its first five NextGen Acela trainsets on August 28 along the Boston-Washington Northeast Corridor. This marks the first phase of a fleet modernization project aimed at enhancing U.S. high-speed rail travel.

The company has yet to release the exact departures featuring the new trains or booking availability dates. Customers should expect announcements with instructions on identifying and reserving these upgraded services.
Amtrak NextGen Acela Fleet to Expand by 2027
Initially, Amtrak will operate both the current Acela fleet and the NextGen models. By 2027, the fleet will expand to 28 trainsets, significantly boosting capacity. Amtrak President Roger Harris emphasized that the fleet upgrade will increase ridership and revenue, especially in the Northeast Corridor — the company’s most profitable route.
The NextGen Acela will provide 27% more seats per trip. More departures and upgraded onboard amenities will position Amtrak to compete more effectively in the premium travel market.
Manufacturing and Testing
Amtrak awarded Alstom the manufacturing contract in 2016. Production began in Hornell, New York, with the first trainsets emerging in 2019. The trains underwent trials at MxV Rail in Pueblo, Colorado, followed by over four years of Northeast Corridor testing.
Testing included more than 1,000 runs and over 225,000 miles of real-world operation. More than 3,000 Amtrak employees have been trained to operate, service, and maintain the trains. While neither Amtrak nor Alstom disclosed technical adjustments made during testing, the fleet is now ready for public service.
