The Amtrak Mardi Gras Service has transportationed almost 19,000 passengers since it went to service in August 2025, evidencing robust demand for the Gulf Coast for regular passenger rail service between Mobile and New Orleans.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak Mardi Gras Service Meets Strong Passenger Demand
Since it opened August 18, 2025, the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service has already become one of the busiest startup routes south of the Capitol. Twice-daily go-betweens link Mobile and New Orleans with Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula.

Amtrak and the Southern Rail Commission state that train sales were a sellout for the first three games at home for the New Orleans Saints and for major regional auto shows, such as Cruisin’ the Coast. Due to this demand, Amtrak supplemented a supplemental car for Saints weekends, boosting capacity by approximately 60 seating per train.
Fares begin at $15 round trip for adults, providing an easy and budget-friendly option to driving the I-10. Local coverage also indicates the service reduces highway traffic jams due to the support it gives to travelers to change to the train from automobiles.
Amtrak Mardi Gras Service Strengthens Regional Connectivity
The Southern Rail Commission points out that this route injects local economies with some money through bringing visitors directly to downtown areas. Local hotels, restaurants, and small businesses around stations in Mississippi and Alabama are getting more people, particularly event weekends.
Amtrak’s “3-3-3” offer, giving triple Guest Rewards points for the first three journeys up to November 18, invites repeated usage and forges an ridership base. And since this early performance shows actual regional potential, the Commission aims to look at further extension of service once performance further warrants it.
According to officials, the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service demonstrates how selective government investment in passenger rail can deliver lasting value to Gulf Coast regions. Through convenience, economic development, and environmental advantages, Amtrak and partners are revitalizing rail journey through the southern United States.
