02.07.2025
Amtrak introduces its long-awaited Mardi Gras Service on August 18, offering daily passenger trains between Mobile and New Orleans with multiple stops along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The new Amtrak service provides morning and evening departures in both directions, giving travelers greater flexibility for leisure, business, or holiday trips.

Coach tickets start at $15 for end-to-end travel, with shorter trips costing even less. Discounts apply for seniors, children, students, veterans, families, and group travelers.
However, the Mardi Gras Service does not stop in Atmore or Pensacola. In 2025, Escambia County officials joined over 60 commissioners to support expanding Amtrak routes toward Jacksonville.
Back in 2016, a special inspection train carried leaders along this Gulf corridor through Pensacola and Atmore. Yet the current launch focuses only on the Mississippi-Louisiana segment.
Amtrak Connects Mobile With Major U.S. Rail Lines
Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson celebrated the return of passenger rail, calling it a major milestone for the city. “We’ve waited for years, and Amtrak’s return brings new connectivity,” he said.
Travelers can connect from the Mardi Gras Service to Amtrak’s City of New Orleans line heading north to Chicago via Jackson and Memphis. The schedule also allows next-day transfers to New York or Los Angeles via Crescent and Sunset Limited.
Amtrak Inaugural Train Departs August 16 With Festive Stops
To mark the launch, an Inaugural Train will depart on August 16, making stops in Mobile, Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis, and New Orleans.

Southern Rail Commission Chair Knox Ross praised the joint effort that made this launch possible. He noted that the service would strengthen tourism, jobs, and education access along the coast.
Amtrak aims to reconnect communities and support Gulf Coast economies, while offering a modern and scenic rail experience for travelers throughout the region.
