Amtrak Extends Empire Service and Prepares for Major Tunnel Upgrades
21.02.2025
Amtrak extends its expanded temporary Empire Service until April 27, adjusting its schedule for crucial tunnel upgrades. These changes aim to improve travel efficiency and enhance passenger convenience throughout the region. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak Introduces Expanded Service to Improve Travel Efficiency
The revised schedule includes 10 round trips daily between New York City and the Capital Region, offering more travel options. To accommodate rising demand, Amtrak adds a fifth train car to 28 weekly trains between New York City and Albany. Additionally, selected trains between Niagara Falls and New York City will feature increased seating capacity.

Amtrak President Roger Harris emphasized the company’s dedication to improving travel conditions while essential tunnel rehabilitation work progresses. These enhancements will modernize critical infrastructure and ensure a more reliable rail system for passengers traveling within the Northeast Corridor.
Amtrak’s Infrastructure Upgrades Will Enhance Regional Rail Reliability
The three-year tunnel restoration project, valued at $1.6 billion, focuses on repairing two of the four East River Tunnel tubes. The work addresses damage caused by Superstorm Sandy and is expected to enhance train service reliability across the region.
Starting April 28, the new Empire Service schedule will feature 10 daily southbound and northbound trains between Albany and New York City. However, trains 238 and 235 will be suspended during construction to minimize operational disruptions.
Additionally, Amtrak will merge the Adirondack and Maple Leaf trains between Albany and New York City, requiring an extended stop in Albany. This adjustment streamlines operations while maintaining passenger convenience.
The updated schedule includes slight timing shifts, with some trains departing up to 30 minutes earlier or later than previous schedules. Southbound trains will leave earlier, while the last northbound train will have a later departure, improving flexibility for travelers.
Amtrak has already updated its website with revised schedules, allowing passengers to plan accordingly. The company remains committed to minimizing disruptions while making long-term infrastructure improvements.
In fiscal year 2024, Empire Service carried over two million passengers, setting ridership and revenue records. This increased demand underscores the importance of continued investment in rail infrastructure and enhanced service offerings.
By upgrading the East River Tunnel and expanding seating capacity, Amtrak aims to provide a more comfortable, efficient, and reliable travel experience. These strategic improvements will ensure a modernized rail system that meets growing commuter needs.
