Amtrak could take part in Michigan Central development

The new hub planned in an area around Corktown and Downtown Detroit could be opened by 2029. The new hub will combine rail services from states that touch the Great Lakes and bus services. The authorities have confirmed that Amtrak’s inclusion in the new hub is still being discussed.

At the moment, Amtrak uses the Baltimore Street Station, located three miles north of downtown. The new hub that may come into being could potentially replace it. This new hub may improve access to downtown.

Michigan Central transit plan remains under review

Michigan Central Station opened in 1914 and remained open until 1988. The site was purchased by the Ford Motor Company in 2018 and rehabilitated and reopened in 2024. The planned addition of Amtrak service at Michigan Central Station would increase the site’s public function. Adding new uses to an existing site helps preserve it.

According to MDOT, the project aims to strengthen Michigan’s passenger rail network and coordinate with existing routes such as the Wolverine Service between Chicago, Detroit, and Pontiac. City officials say it fits Detroit’s broader effort to modernize infrastructure and improve sustainable travel.

MDOT and Michigan Central continue to refine project details. All partners emphasize that the plan represents an early step toward creating a unified, multimodal future for Detroit’s transportation network.
