Amtrak Cancels Trains Ahead of Chicago’s First Below-Zero Temperatures This Year. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Amtrak has announced multiple train cancellations as Chicago braces for its first below-zero temperatures. Passengers are urged to prepare for delays caused by extreme weather conditions.
Amtrak Trains Impacted by Extreme Weather Conditions
Amtrak confirmed several disruptions to its services, citing the upcoming severe cold front. The Empire Builder Train 7/27, scheduled to depart Union Station at 3:05 p.m. Monday, has been canceled. This decision was based on anticipated temperatures dropping dangerously low, according to a statement shared on X, previously known as Twitter.

Additionally, Amtrak canceled other services, including two Empire Builder routes and a Borealis train bound for St. Paul. Empire Builder Train 8/28, initially scheduled to head to Chicago, will operate only from Seattle to Spokane, leaving other segments of its route suspended.
Chicago’s Cold Front and Its Effects on Travel
Chicago is expected to experience its first below-zero temperatures this winter, with lows forecasted to reach five to six degrees below zero. Wind chills could drop even further, reaching 20 to 25 degrees below zero, creating hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service predicts the extreme cold will persist through the beginning of the week. By midweek, temperatures are expected to gradually rise back into the 20s and 30s. Travelers are encouraged to check for updates from Amtrak and local transit authorities, including Metra and the CTA, which have advised passengers to monitor their websites for potential delays.
Amtrak’s proactive cancellations highlight the challenges posed by Chicago’s harsh winter weather. Passengers should remain informed and take precautions to ensure safe travel during this cold snap.
