According to the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), the 4.8% rise from 1.38 million in fiscal 2024 signals sustained demand for rail connectivity across the state. Amtrak service to Roanoke posted the strongest growth at 6.9%, jumping from 338,125 to 361,420 riders.

And Norfolk’s line attracted the most passengers overall, handling 542,743 travelers — up 4.7% from the previous year. In June alone, Amtrak ridership rose to 126,284, marking a 13.3% increase over June 2024.

Amtrak Expansion Reflects Strong Demand in Virginia

VPRA Executive Director DJ Stadtler said the rising numbers confirm public interest in expanded rail options. “We’re seeing real momentum,” he explained. “From Northern Virginia to the New River Valley, our projects are reshaping mobility.”

So far, this growth reflects broader efforts to reduce road congestion and offer sustainable travel. Virginia’s investments in Amtrak infrastructure aim to enhance frequency, reliability, and convenience.

Stadtler also highlighted that such improvements are necessary to meet future travel needs and build a balanced transportation network. These plans align with the state’s long-term development strategies.

Amtrak to Add More Trips by 2030

By 2030, Virginia intends to support 13 daily Amtrak round trips to Washington, D.C., up from the current eight. This expansion will open new travel options for commuters and tourists alike.

Because of this, Amtrak’s role in regional connectivity will grow, bringing added value to local economies. Improved service levels will also encourage modal shifts from cars to trains, reducing emissions.

To stay updated on these developments or explore route details, travelers can visit the VPRA website. With demand steadily rising, Amtrak is poised to remain central to Virginia’s transport future.
