Amtrak Modernizes Platforms and Restores Historic Elements
The new north platform is scheduled to open by January 2026, with further structural work continuing through March. Alongside this, Amtrak crews are restoring original windows, insulating the pedestrian overpass, and rehabilitating the historic baggage lift.
Engineers are also resurfacing interior floors and updating door hardware to improve comfort and accessibility. New historically accurate windows will preserve the station’s architectural character while enhancing energy efficiency.
Amtrak Coordinates with PennDOT on Bridge and Security Upgrades
Amtrak is also collaborating with PennDOT to extend the pedestrian bridge, which will connect to a new parking lot by fall 2026. This project will improve station access and reduce congestion.
Meanwhile, Amtrak is upgrading police facilities at the station. The redesigned space will include an expanded evidence room, a modern canine unit, and a restored storefront built using salvaged historical materials.
Lancaster Station, built in 1929, remains the second busiest in Pennsylvania and served 464,190 passengers in FY24. This marks a 22% increase from the previous year, with rising demand for both Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian routes.
These infrastructure investments will reinforce the station’s regional significance and provide long-term value for passengers and the community.
