Lewistown Station upgrades are set to begin tomorrow. Amtrak is launching a broad improvement program at the Pennsylvania facility.

The work is scheduled for completion in spring 2027. It is intended to modernize the station. Lewistown is Amtrak’s oldest depot, and the railroad’s Pennsylvanian route serves it daily.

What the Lewistown Station upgrades include?

Plans call for a 250-foot concrete boarding platform to improve accessibility. The work also combines exterior access upgrades with work inside the station building. In addition, the project includes updated LED platform lighting and signage to improve visibility and safety.

It also includes a new passenger drop-off zone and two accessible parking stalls to improve station access. Other elements include a new entrance door and waiting room windows. The work also includes a new HVAC system and renovation of a restroom.

“As Amtrak continues modernizing stations across the country, improving the customer experience remains at the heart of our efforts,” said Amtrak Vice President of Accessibility David Handera in a press release. “The station and platform enhancements at Lewistown will create a more welcoming and functional environment.”

Broader accessibility effort

The Lewistown Station upgrades are part of Amtrak’s broader effort at stations nationwide. That effort is intended to incorporate more integrated and comprehensive accessibility measures. To date, 19 stations comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Also, another 50 stations are targeted to reach compliance in fiscal-year 2026.
