The outage struck around 5 p.m. Thursday and disabled overhead power lines along all four tracks east of Westport. As a result, train service along Metro-North’s New Haven Line and Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor came to a standstill.

MTA crews worked overnight and managed to restore limited service by early morning. Two of the four tracks resumed operations, but service remained restricted and delays persisted throughout peak hours.

The first Metro-North departure from New Haven left 15 minutes late and skipped some scheduled stops. Passengers reported ongoing delays averaging 15 minutes, even after the morning rush ended.

Amtrak and Metro-North Crews Rush to Restore Service

Amtrak and Metro-North teams remained on-site through the day, focusing on stabilizing the grid and addressing the electrical system outage. Speed restrictions and congestion affected trains between Stamford and New Haven.

In a public statement, Amtrak confirmed that maintenance crews were actively working to resolve the disruption. They emphasized safety while warning passengers to expect continued service changes.

The electrical issue also strained track capacity, adding pressure to an already busy corridor. Train movements were slower, and some services experienced additional cancellations or re-routing.

Infrastructure Failures Continue to Challenge Amtrak and Metro-North

Officials have not yet identified the root cause of the failure. Investigators are reviewing maintenance records and equipment diagnostics to understand what triggered the system-wide outage.

Transit authorities advised commuters to stay informed through alerts and real-time updates. They also acknowledged the increasing urgency for infrastructure upgrades in one of the nation’s busiest rail corridors.

As ridership grows and extreme conditions persist, Amtrak and Metro-North face mounting pressure to invest in system resilience and reliability.
