The new six-axle locomotive is built on the EURODUAL platform. It can haul heavy freight trains at speeds of up to 120 km/h and operates on both 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC electrification systems.

Fleet Expansion with the Dual-System Locomotive

ALSA Rail is actively modernizing its rolling stock. The company currently operates Class 269 locomotives running on DC power to transport steel from ArcelorMittal plants to central Spain.

The old railway line passes through the Pajares Pass. Meanwhile, the new route, which includes a 25 km base tunnel, is electrified with 25 kV AC, making the dual-system locomotive essential for seamless operations across both networks.

These new locomotives will enable ALSA Rail to maintain reliable service even in case of restrictions on the mountain pass route. At the same time, this shift opens the way for increased tourist rail services along the scenic mountain line.

The Dual-System Locomotive Unlocks New Logistics Potential

Switching to versatile locomotives allows ALSA Rail to manage routes more flexibly. The old line will be primarily used for passenger traffic, including the tourist trains that began operating in 2024.

Traditionally focused on passenger transport, ALSA Rail entered the freight market in early 2024, strengthening its market presence and diversifying operations.

The move follows the example of national operator Renfe Mercancías, which began operating Euro6000 locomotives in 2023. ALSA Rail has successfully continued this approach, prioritizing modern and efficient technology.
