Končar Battery Trains: Innovation Showcased at InnoTrans 2024
At InnoTrans 2024, Končar unveiled its advanced battery trains, designed for HŽPP, Croatia’s national passenger operator, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These trains run on both overhead lines and batteries, offering a solution for routes without electrification. In 2022, the contract was signed for two models.
New Pesa Tram Platform: Innovations for City Transport
One operates solely on batteries, while the other uses both batteries and overhead power. Six charging stations have been installed to support their operation.
Features of Končar Battery Trains
The two-car model is built for low-traffic lines without electrification. It can operate for up to 18 hours a day, covering around 480 kilometers. With a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour, this train is ideal for regional routes. It has 102 seats, with a total capacity of 216 passengers. The batteries, mounted on the roof, hold 736 kWh of energy, ensuring extended operation.
The three-car model runs on both batteries and 25 kV power lines. Charging is possible from overhead lines or dedicated charging stations. This flexibility makes the train suitable for various routes and operational conditions.
Benefits for Croatia and Export Opportunities
The development of Končar battery trains marks a significant leap for Croatia’s railway network. Much of the country’s rail infrastructure is not electrified, and these trains are key to improving passenger services. Additionally, Končar sees an export market for these battery-powered trains in other countries facing similar challenges.
At InnoTrans 2024, Končar also showcased an inspection train designed to monitor tracks and overhead lines. This train enhances safety and provides comfort for staff during long inspections. Its technology ensures railway maintenance is performed efficiently and reliably.

With this, Končar demonstrates how battery trains can revolutionize transport on unelectrified routes, contributing to sustainability and modernizing rail services.
