Stadler and KiwiRail have strengthened their partnership with a new rolling stock agreement, which includes nine additional DM locomotives, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Additional order for nine DM class locomotives from Stadler

Stadler is currently producing 57 narrow-gauge DM class locomotives ordered by KiwiRail in 2021, primarily for mainline operations on the South Island rail network.

Under the new agreement, both companies have expanded their commitments by placing an additional order for nine DM class locomotives equipped with ETCS technology for use on the North Island rail network.

Additionally, the latest ten DM class locomotives from the initial 2021 order will also be equipped with ETCS, bringing the total number of DM class locomotives with ETCS on the North Island to 19.

ETCS will enable the DM class locomotives to operate safely and seamlessly in the Auckland metro area, equipped with ETCS Level 1 trackside signaling system.

This initiative will also confirm the future safe operation of DM class locomotives in the Wellington metro area when the signaling system is upgraded to ETCS.

As part of the second agreement, Stadler will supply 24 hybrid battery-diesel narrow-gauge shunting locomotives with a central cab and a maximum axle load of 16 tonnes.

The new shunting locomotives are specially designed for operation on all shunting yards owned by KiwiRail.

With an integrated battery module, the locomotive will primarily operate as a zero-emission vehicle, significantly contributing to reducing KiwiRail’s carbon footprint in shunting activities.

The comprehensive contract also includes spare parts, special tools, and technical services.

The shunting locomotives will be designed to be remotely controlled from the engineer’s cab within the yard using a safe remote control system.
