AC-series diesel locomotives for heavy haul and harsh climates
20.03.2026
AC-series diesel locomotives are part of CRRC Ziyang’s next-generation diesel locomotive platform. As reported by Rail Express, the company entered the Australian market in 2011. That was the first time its high-end diesel locomotives were exported to a developed country.

AC-series diesel locomotives and model range
Since then, demand for the Chinese manufacturer’s premium locomotives has risen around the world. This includes the world’s most powerful narrow-gauge AC-drive diesel locomotive. At the same time, CRRC Ziyang’s next-generation AC-series diesel locomotive platform is emerging. It is emerging on the international stage as an emblem of China’s rail transit capabilities.

These AC-series diesel locomotives include the AC20, AC30, AC40 and AC50 models. Their high-output engines range from 2000 to 5000 horsepower. Also, the locomotives deliver faster operating speeds. In addition, they improve transport efficiency. They offer other benefits as well.
Customisation, traction and maintenance
One main feature of the AC platform is its high degree of customisation. It gives operators tailor-made solutions for their own requirements.
Configuration options
The modular options are listed below:
- power rating
- track gauge
- braking systems
- axle load
- onboard equipment
- exterior paint design
- interior fittings
Meanwhile, the platform’s pre-designed interfaces speed up development and production cycles. They help operators save time and money. They also help them deploy new locomotives more quickly.

Separately, the AC technology delivers exceptional traction performance. For example, this applies on steep or complex gradients. Also, it applies in heavy haul operations, as CRRC Ziyang has highlighted.
Australia-focused design
Li Xining is CRRC Ziyang’s Chief Engineer. He said the locomotives are built to handle the extremes of Australia’s climate. This includes the sweltering heat and dust of the Pilbara in Western Australia.
Our AC traction diesel locomotives utilise an independent ventilation and cooling system design, preventing thermal interference and maximising the cooling efficiency of individual systems,” he explained.
“This configuration significantly reduces internal exposure to wind-borne sand and dust, thereby enhancing the environmental adaptability of critical components.
“Combined with a high adhesion coefficient and robust traction control capabilities, this ensures reliable performance across Australia’s diverse and challenging rail networks.”
Maintenance and cab layout
In addition, other features include a unique “middle corridor” body design. It allows easier and more efficient maintenance. Still, the dual cab design enables more flexible operations. At the same time, it was developed with driver comfort and ergonomics in mind. Meanwhile, it integrates effective noise and vibration reduction.
Standards and global reach
The platform is compatible with major global standards. These standards are listed below:
- AS (Australian Standards)
- UIC (International Union of Railways)
- IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)
- EN (European Standards)
- AAR (Association of American Railroads)
- GOST (Gosudarstvenny Standart)
- GB (GuoBiao – Chinese national standard)
- TB ( TieDao – Chinese railway industry standards)
Xining said CRRC Ziyang is a key subsidiary of CRRC Corporation Limited. He described CRRC Corporation Limited as a world-leading railway equipment manufacturer. He also said the company is committed to customers worldwide. It aims to deliver technologically advanced, highly adaptable solutions.
“CRRC Ziyang has supplied more than 1400 locomotives to 37 countries and regions around the world,” he said.
“The company’s achievements not only demonstrate the international competitiveness of China’s high-end rail transit equipment but also support the sustainable and efficient development of global railway transportation.
