CPKC strike notice centers on Canadian IBEW workers

Canadian Pacific Kansas City said it had received a 72-hour strike notice from members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The notice points to a possible work stoppage involving Canadian electrical workers represented by the IBEW Canadian Signals and Communications Council No. 11.

The council represents about 300 CPKC employees across Canada, according to the railroad. The union intends to begin strike action at 8 a.m. MT on Sunday, May 31, unless the two sides reach a negotiated outcome before that point.

Railroad says operations will continue

CPKC said it has prepared contingency plans that would allow the railroad to continue operating in a “safe and efficient” manner if the IBEW walkout goes ahead. The company framed the notice not as an immediate service halt, but as a labour action risk it is preparing to manage.

In its IBEW bargaining update, CPKC said it remains committed to bargaining in good faith with the union. The railroad said it wants an agreement that works for employees and their families, customers, and the company. Talks are expected to continue into the weekend, while CPKC said it still hopes to reach a resolution without a work stoppage.
