Brazilian mining company Vale, in partnership with the telecommunications company Vivo, is implementing a project worth 240 million Brazilian reals (approximately 50 million US dollars) to deploy a 4G mobile network on the Carajás Railway (Estrada de Ferro Carajás).

The European Commission allocates €7 billion for funding transportation projects

The project covers a 892-kilometer line between the mines in the Serra dos Carajás mountains (Pará state) and the deepwater port of Ponta da Madeira near the city of São Luís, as well as a 101-kilometer branch line to the S11D iron ore deposit.

The Carajás Railway connects the states of Maranhão and Pará and serves 28 Brazilian cities.

Vale’s initiative includes the installation of 49 mobile communication towers with the necessary equipment.

The implementation of the project will facilitate the transition from analog to digital communication on the 1600 mm gauge railway lines, accelerate access to train telemetry data systems, and serve as the basis for the implementation of next-generation innovative systems to enhance safety.

In addition, by the end of 2024, internet access will be available at all 15 passenger stations on the Carajás Railway. Approximately 280 access points will be installed in important locations for local communities, such as schools, hospitals, and other public centers.
