Zurich–Vienna Nightjet Begins New-Generation Service

Zurich–Vienna Nightjet service now uses new-generation trains following the inaugural run on June 14. Operated by ÖBB and SBB, the night train offers improved comfort, more privacy, free Wi-Fi, and Mini Cabins designed for individual passengers.

Travelers can now use the latest Nightjet rolling stock between Zurich and Vienna⁠, one of the most important night routes between Switzerland and Austria.

The first modern Nightjet train left Vienna for Zurich on the evening of June 14. Its departure was marked with a ceremony at Vienna Central Station, and the train arrived in Zurich on the morning of June 15.

After the launch on the Zurich–Vienna route, two of the eight night trains leaving Zurich now run with new-generation Nightjet stock. The first route from Zurich to receive these trains was Zurich–Hamburg, while Zurich–Amsterdam is planned to follow in December.

Zurich–Vienna Nightjet adds Mini Cabins and comfort features

Matthias Bütler, member of the SBB executive board and interim head of the passenger transport division, said passengers have responded positively to the new trains.

“The feedback from our customers regarding the new-generation Nightjet, which is already operating between Zurich and Hamburg, has been very positive. The modern design, increased comfort, and new offerings, such as the Mini Cabins, are particularly appreciated,” said Matthias Bütler.

Kurt Bauer, head of long-distance transport at ÖBB Personenverkehr, said the Vienna–Zurich connection is a suitable route for the new Nightjet because demand is strong for comfortable and sustainable travel.

“The Vienna–Zurich route is an ideal application for the new-generation Nightjet. It connects two of the most important cultural and tourist cities in the Alpine region and meets strong demand for comfortable and sustainable travel options. With Nightjet, we offer not just a connection between two destinations, but a travel experience that becomes part of the vacation or city break right from the start,” said Kurt Bauer.

Discounted tickets start at 34 Swiss francs

SBB and ÖBB provide reduced fares for passengers who book Nightjet trips early and can choose their travel date or departure time flexibly.

On the Zurich–Vienna route, a one-way ticket in a seating car starts at 34 Swiss francs, or nearly EUR 37, per person.

For families and groups of friends, a berth in a 4-person compartment is available from 53 Swiss francs, or about EUR 57. The same starting price applies to the new Mini Cabins, which are intended especially for solo travelers.

Passengers looking for more room, greater comfort, and additional privacy can book a berth in a sleeping compartment from 86 Swiss francs.

The operators state that these are discounted fares with limited availability. Prices may change depending on seat availability, travel date, and booking time.

New-generation Nightjet trains offer 254 seats

Each new-generation Nightjet train consists of 7 cars. The formation includes two seating cars, with one used as a control car and the other as a multifunctional car, along with 3 couchette cars and 2 sleeping cars.

The train offers a maximum capacity of 254 seats.

The multifunctional car includes 6 bicycle spaces and provides additional room for luggage, strollers, and sports equipment.

Free Wi-Fi, charging options, and NFC access

The latest Nightjet trains⁠ also include a wider range of onboard technical features. Passengers have access to free Wi-Fi, a modern passenger information system across all cars, standard power sockets, USB ports, and wireless charging for electronic devices.

The windows are designed to improve mobile signal transmission, which should help provide a more stable phone connection during the journey.

Compartments are fitted with screens that allow passengers to adjust comfort functions, including lighting, and to contact onboard staff. Access to compartments is managed through an electronic NFC card system, while video surveillance is installed in all cars to improve the sense of security.
