In recent weeks, ÖBB specialists conducted more than 280 trial runs using locomotives, diagnostic cars with high-sensitivity sensors, and Railjet passenger trains.

Initial runs reached speeds of up to 160 km/h. Engineers then tested the overhead catenary system, GSM-R radio communication, and the ETCS train control system, gradually increasing speed to 250 km/h.

This performance exceeds the standard Railjet operating speed of 230 km/h and confirms that the route can be completed in 45 minutes.

How Koralm Line Testing Was Conducted?

Engineers evaluated the infrastructure under real conditions. They tested safety systems and control accuracy across different sections of the route.

The tests confirmed the readiness of the railway for full-scale operation and safe service starting December 2025.

Preparations After Completion of Testing

The final passenger train timetable for the Koralm line will be released in September. Training for drivers and technical staff will begin in August.

In addition, emergency drills will be held in the coming months involving response teams from Styria and Carinthia to ensure full readiness for any potential incidents along the route.
