The project is part of Greater Manchester’s Bee Network, which aims to create the first fully integrated public transport system outside London, improving travel across the region.

The new station will include two platforms with step-free access, a town centre car park, and upgraded walking and cycling routes. Services will run hourly between Wigan and Manchester Victoria, extending to Stalybridge.

Wigan Council Supports Local Economic Growth

Wigan Council is working with Transport for Greater Manchester and the Combined Authority to finalize the business case and station design. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with services starting in 2027.

Local firm Murphy, based in Golborne, has been selected to deliver the final station design, in partnership with WSP. This appointment supports local jobs and prioritizes community involvement.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham called the station approval a “major milestone.” He praised the public’s efforts and highlighted the project’s role in easing congestion, lowering emissions, and boosting access to jobs.

Wigan Council Invests in Future Infrastructure

The new Golborne station will become part of eight commuter rail lines integrated into the Bee Network by 2028. These improvements follow a 2024 public consultation that received strong support from residents.

MP Jo Platt and Council Leader David Molyneux emphasized the station’s value for economic development and social mobility. The project is funded entirely through devolved local government budgets.

Once open, the station will offer Golborne its only direct rail link to Manchester. Located five miles south of Wigan North Western and one mile from Golborne Junction, it will include CCTV, lighting, and digital info screens.

Murphy’s Transportation Director Chris Cayton said the station aligns with the company’s mission to deliver world-class infrastructure and improve quality of life for local communities.
