Western Railway Unveils Special Coaches for Elderly in Mumbai
20.06.2025
Western Railway has launched special coaches for elderly passengers in Mumbai to reduce overcrowding and offer safer, more comfortable travel for over 50,000 senior citizens across its suburban rail network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These coaches will replace luggage compartments on all 105 non-air-conditioned trains, including 90 twelve-car and 15 fifteen-car rakes. Positioned as the seventh coach from the Churchgate end, each unit features 13 seats and standing space for 91 passengers.

Currently, senior citizens only have access to 14 reserved seats, typically in the third and twelfth cars. But during peak hours, extreme congestion makes it difficult to reach or use these limited seats, putting elderly travelers at risk.
The new coaches will significantly ease access and provide a reliable space for seniors. By reallocating existing capacity, Western Railway avoids disrupting cargo services while improving the quality of life for older commuters.
Western Railway Responds to PIL with Senior-Friendly Coaches
This initiative follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court. The petition urged authorities to offer dedicated space for elderly passengers, much like those for people with disabilities.
In response, Western Railway allocated ₹5.4 crore (approximately $645,000) for this conversion effort. The project has already started, and all 105 coaches are expected to be operational within the next year.
Western Railway Enhances Commuter Experience Through Inclusivity
A railway spokesperson described the project as a step toward greater inclusion and accessibility. The goal is to modernize services while protecting vulnerable groups who rely on the network daily.
Although luggage space will be slightly reduced, the redesign carefully balances passenger needs with operational demands. The added space for elderly commuters addresses long-standing safety concerns.
As Mumbai grows and its senior population increases, Western Railway’s strategy could become a model for other major Indian cities. This project ensures elderly passengers travel with dignity, comfort, and greater security.
