Western Dedicated Freight Corridor Nears Completion in India
17.05.2025
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is expected to be fully operational by October 2025, linking Vaitarna to Jawaharlal Nehru Port and advancing India’s logistics infrastructure significantly. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This 102.9 km segment marks the final phase of the 1506 km corridor connecting Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Navi Mumbai. It will streamline cargo movement between Delhi-NCR and India’s busiest port, JNPT.

Construction in the Vaitarna–JNPT section faced obstacles due to urban density and ecological restrictions in Mumbai. Despite the challenges, DFCCIL made notable progress in land acquisition and resettlement efforts.
Around 225 hectares were acquired at a cost of approximately $312 million. Nearly 2960 families were relocated to make space for the corridor. Environmental safeguards included 15 km of elevated tracks to preserve mangroves.
DFCCIL also launched connectivity enhancements in Kalamboli, Kopar, and Havar. To ease road congestion, they are constructing bridges and eliminating level crossings that pose safety risks.
The segment involves 53 major bridges, 242 minor ones, and 1.17 km of tunnels. The Kundevahal tunnel, a key element, was completed to remove a critical bottleneck.
Moreover, the corridor integrates 239 km of track, 10 road overbridges, and nine underbridges. These upgrades will eliminate 20 level crossings, improving both safety and operational speed.
Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to Cut Logistics Costs
By diverting cargo away from passenger lines, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor will reduce delays and support faster freight delivery across industrial zones and ports.
The project will also support new industrial clusters, terminals, and improve cargo flow to India’s western coastline, enhancing export efficiency.
Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to Expand National Reach
With the Eastern Corridor fully operational and Western DFC 93.2% complete, India’s dedicated freight network will span 2843 km upon completion of this final segment.
DFCCIL’s commitment to sustainable logistics and efficiency sets the foundation for India’s transformation into a global freight powerhouse.
