Webuild and the construction of the Santomarco tunnel

Webuild secured a 60% stake in the consortium alongside SELI, Ghella, and Pizzarotti. Around 1,500 specialists, including subcontractors, will join the project to accelerate progress and maintain high construction standards.

The main feature of the section will be the 15 km double-track Santomarco tunnel. Four modern tunnel boring machines will be deployed to ensure precision and safety in complex geological conditions.

Once completed, the old single-track tunnel will be closed, reducing operational risks and increasing line capacity.

Webuild strengthens its position in Italy’s infrastructure

The project also includes the construction of 11 bridges, two of which will measure 350 m and 205 m. A modern station will be built in Montalto Uffugo, enhancing access for local residents and the university community in Rende.

Webuild continues to lead the development of Italy’s HSR network. In 2023, the company signed another €2.8 billion contract to design and build the 35 km Battipaglia — Romagnano section.

By February 2025, excavation began on the 3 km Saginara tunnel. For this, Webuild deployed its largest tunnel boring machine, Partenope, measuring 130 m in length, weighing 4,000 t, and featuring a 13.5 m cutting head diameter.

These large-scale projects boost connectivity in southern Italy and stimulate regional economic growth. Improved infrastructure attracts investment and strengthens the area’s long-term development potential.
