Waterfront Express Launches Summer Train Season in Port Alberni
08.06.2025
Waterfront Express opens its summer season on Saturday, June 7, offering scenic rides, steam weekends, and local student participation in Port Alberni’s historic railway experience. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Crews prepared the No. 11 MBL diesel locomotive for the launch, and a test run in May welcomed exchange students from Montreal. Operations manager Richard Spencer confirmed four departures on opening day—11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.

Waterfront Express to Run Weekends with Expanded Steam Events
In June and September, the train will run on Saturdays and Sundays. In July and August, service expands to include Fridays. Riders can enjoy both the diesel engine and the Baldwin No. 7 steam locomotive.
Four “steam weekends” will enhance the schedule—June 29 to July 1, July 19–20, August 2–4, and August 30 to September 1. Spencer says these events boost visitor interest and highlight the heritage equipment.
Waterfront Express Supported by Volunteers and Student Hires
Volunteers have cleared new segments along Stamp Avenue and Harbour Road, aiming to extend the train’s reach. Meanwhile, seven new crew members earned Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) certification—key for safety-sensitive positions.
Through the Canada Summer Jobs grant, APR hired two students to support train operations. The Industrial Heritage Society also brought on two more for museum tours at the Industrial Heritage Centre.
Spencer emphasized that students will assist with storytelling, public interaction, ticketing, and train cleanup. Their presence adds value to the visitor experience and supports daily operations.
The Waterfront Express continues to serve as a community attraction and educational platform. Tickets for the diesel and steam rides can be purchased online at albernipacificrailway.ca.
